Easter 2025, four rigs on one beach
Maisha. Msafirii. · Life. Traveller.
This is for anyone who stares at a map a little too long. You've seen the photos of red dirt and empty beaches and thought one day, then wondered where on earth you'd even start.
Start here.
Outback Maasai began as Maisha Msafirii: a handful of mates in Western Australia with Kenyan roots, a few 4WDs and a habit of taking the long way round. Somewhere along the track it stopped being about us.
It's about you now. The free spirits and the first-timers. The families who'd swap a screen for a campfire any night. The mates who keep saying we should go and finally do. You don't need the perfect setup or all the answers. You only need to go, and to know there's a tribe already out there saving you a spot by the fire.
We make our tees for that. For sand in the seams and smoke in the cotton. For golden hours and no signal.
Pack light. Go far. Come home with stories. Maisha. Msafirii.

Every crew has its legends. Ours have bull bars.
These are the real 4WDs behind Outback Maasai, the ones that have carried our mates, families, swags and far too many snacks across beaches, dunes and river crossings. Each one has a name, and each one has a personality.

Maisha
Swahili · life
The heart of the convoy. Wherever Maisha parks, that's where camp is.
-

Msafirii
Swahili · traveller
Never happier than with a long road ahead and no particular reason to turn back.
-

Mchezo
Swahili · play, game
The cheeky one. If there's a dune worth climbing, Mchezo's already halfway up it.
-

Tanzanite
Named for the rare East African gem
The one that catches the light. Rare, a little precious, and always worth the look back.
-

Mrefu
Swahili · tall, long
Goes the distance and stands a head above the rest of the crew.

The deal
Phones down. Screens off.
It's printed inside the neck of our tees for a reason. Half the time out there, there's no signal anyway. The other half, we leave the phones in the glovebox on purpose. This is the one rule we're hard on, and here's why.
-
You're actually there.
The sunset doesn't need a filter. With the phone away you see it, you hear the fire crack, you notice who's sitting next to you.
-
The fire does the talking.
The best yarns happen around a fire with nothing to check. Stories come out. So do the questions kids never ask in the car.
-
Bored is good.
The first hour without screens, the kids complain. Give it time. Then there's a game nobody taught them, a stick that's suddenly a sword, a cubby under the awning.
-
Stars beat screens.
Get past the city lights and the sky fills up. Lie back on the swag and start counting. Nobody's ever finished.

The screens-off weekend challenge
Try it on your next trip. Tick them off as you go. Your ticks stay on this device, nobody else sees them.

That's a proper weekend. Karibu to the crew. Tag #outbackmaasai when you're home so we can see where you went.
How the shop works
Printed when you order. Shipped to your door.
Every tee is printed on demand by our print partner after you order it, so nothing sits in a warehouse. The Maasai Shuka isn't printed; it's posted separately. Prices are in Australian dollars, and shipping costs and times are on our Shipping & Returns page. Questions? Email outbackmaasai@gmail.com.
Phones down. Dust up.
Your turn.
You don't need a big rig or a big trip. Pick a spot a couple of hours out, throw the swag in, leave the phone in the glovebox and go. Take a mate. Then come back and tell us about it.
Tag #outbackmaasai or @outbackmaasai wherever you camp.
