Some words don't translate cleanly. They carry a feeling, a time of day, a promise between people. When we started printing tees for the ones who head out past where the bitumen ends, we didn't want a logo and a slogan. We wanted words that mean something when you're standing by a still lake with your mates, the fire waiting back at camp.
So every Outback Maasai design is a word, borrowed with respect from Swahili and the Maa language of the Maasai and Samburu peoples, paired with a story. Here's what each one means, and why it ended up on a shirt.
Jioni: evening, the golden hour
Jioni is Swahili for evening. Not the clock time, the feeling: the light goes amber, the dust hangs gold in the air, and someone finally says "right, who's on firewood?" It's the hour the whole camp slows down at once. Tyres stop crunching, kettles start, kids go quiet for the first time all day.
The Jioni design is for everyone who plans their day around that light. It comes in tees for men, women, kids and toddlers, plus the Jioni hoodie for when the sun drops and the cold comes in fast. See the full range in the Jioni collection.
Osotua: a sacred bond built on giving
Osotua is a Maasai word for a sacred bond between people, one built on giving rather than taking. It's the mate who tows you out of the bog at dusk without being asked. The stranger at the campground who hands over a spare jerry can. The family that has been heading to the same beach for three generations.
Osotua isn't a deal. Nobody keeps score. That's exactly why we love it as a word for the road, where the people around the fire matter more than the destination. Wear it in the Osotua collection: men's, women's, kids' and toddler tees.
Namelok: beautiful woman
Namelok is a Samburu and Maasai name meaning "beautiful woman". It honours the women who keep the whole show on the road: the ones who read the map when the signal dies, back the trailer in one go and still find the marshmallows at the bottom of the tub.
The photo at the top of this post was shot at a lake on one of those trips. Still water, tall trees, a Namelok tee. That's the feeling. Find it in the Namelok collection, including the women's tee and men's tee for the blokes who want to honour her too.
Maisha Msafirii: life, traveller
Maisha means life. Msafirii means traveller. Put them together and you get the line that sits at the heart of everything we make: Maisha. Msafirii. Life. Traveller. It's a reminder that the trip isn't a break from life. For a lot of us, it is the life part.
Those two words are also the names of two of the crew's rigs, and they're painted on the plates. Every tee we print is, in a way, a Maisha Msafirii tee.
No Signal. Better Connection.
The newest design says it plainly: No Signal. Better Connection. Out where the bars drop to zero, something better shows up. Conversations go longer. Kids invent games out of sticks and sand. You notice the stars.
It's the design we'd hand to anyone who has ever felt their shoulders drop the moment the phone stops buzzing. Grab the men's tee, the women's tee or the No Signal hoodie, or browse the No Signal collection.
The OG and Born to Tour
The OG is the original badge, the first mark we ever printed and still the one that turns up most around the fire. It's in the OG collection as tees and the OG hoodie. Born to Tour is for the ones who were packing the car before they could walk, the kids who know the sound of a fridge compressor at night better than a city siren. It's in the Born to Tour collection.
Why words, not logos
A logo says who made the shirt. A word with a meaning says something about the person wearing it. When someone at the servo asks "what does Jioni mean?", you get to tell them about the golden hour. When a stranger reads Osotua, you get to tell them about the mate who pulled you out. That's a better conversation starter than any brand name. Want a few more words for the road? Start with our Swahili words for travellers.
We keep the print sized like a real tee, not a billboard, so it reads cleanly across a campsite and still looks sharp at the pub on the way home. If you want three meanings in one go, the three tees for A$99 deal lets you mix any adult designs.
